TechServe Alliance History

In response to concerns about various legislative initiatives that would have placed unfair burdens on the computer consultant industry, as well as restricted the flexibility of consultants and their clients to develop appropriate working arrangements, 11 computer brokers from various states attended a two-day meeting in January of 1987 to discuss organizing a national association to represent their industry.

Getting Started

After the meeting, the attendees returned to their home states to establish the first seven chapters of the National Association of Computer Consultant Brokers. These original chapters included: New England, New York, Washington, DC, the Mid-West and Northern and Southern California. The new association quickly discovered many national issues that required their attention, such as leased employees, overtime and employee benefits. Their activities also expanded beyond advocacy to include developing model contracts, explaining wage plans and providing general legal advice to members.

In 1988 the group was renamed the National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses (NACCB) to better reflect the growing membership. That same year the first newsletter was published and the first NACCB conference was held. Subsequently, an NACCB national conference has been held every year attracting increasing numbers of attendees and becoming the primary forum for discussing the pressing issues of the industry. A Statement of Principles was also developed to help establish an ethical code of conduct to which all NACCB members are required to subscribe.

Refocusing Our Approach

Over the years, the area of focus began to expand as the association's member base continued to diversify. With this growth, it was decided that the NACCB name no longer communicated the depth and breadth of our services and member base. A new name was sought to represent the collective expertise and energy exhibited by an elite group of IT services leaders. In April 2009, the association announced the launch of its new brand - TechServe Alliance.

TechServe Alliance continues to remain focused on:
  • Encouraging the highest professional standards in the IT service industry
  • Supporting members as they grow and develop their businesses
  • Providing members with timely vital information about IT service industry trends and public policy issues
  • Working with policy makers to develop public policy that reflect the realities of the 21st century economy
  • Expanding high-tech educational opportunities in the United States
